Blog » What is anxiety? 2017-10-29

Anxiety comes in many different forms from slight nervousness to an overwhelming feeling of fear and doom. Most of us at some point in our life feel anxious about something. Getting married, having a baby, going on a trip, taking a test and the list goes on. But when anxiety takes over our lives it is difficult to deal with life in a "normal" way. When I say that I mean normal for the person who is going through anxiety.

I remember when I couldn't take a shower unless someone was in the house. I believed if I was alone something awful would happen. It was irrational but it was real to me. Sometimes there doesn't seem to be any reason to be anxious but yet we can feel almost paralyzed with fear. Anxiety is something that usually comes from irrational thinking. Of course, there are many rational reasons to be anxious. Let's face it taking an exam is not a calming experience. I usually take my students on a journey in a visualisation to help them learn to breath and relax a little before an exam. It doesn't always work but it is something to focus on other than their anxiety.

Sometimes just talking to someone who listens and helps us see the possibilities of where the anxiety is coming from can lessen the anxiety we are experiencing. Having some relaxation exercises and changing our thinking can help. There are many possibilities that may help.

If you need some help with this issues email or call us and we will do our best to help you find an answer. It doesn't happen over night but their are tools that will help.
